More Ways Than Ever to Get It Wrong?

It’s been almost a year since we posted a blog! During that time we conducted workshops, answered content requests from periodicals and managed a period of transition that took longer than we ever anticipated. We missed the excitement of adding new original things for our followers to read, but were comforted by how universal and lasting all of prior posts have turned out to be. We know this because whenever someone asks us a question, more often than not, we are able to answer it by referencing one of our prior posts!

Holiday 2018 is now around the corner, and with it preparations for Hanukah, and Christmas. As you know, we believe the best gift parents can give their children is the habit of thinking before buying. And we believe encouraging kids to quickly research the true value of a possible gift is the easiest and most lasting way to do that. We don’t advocate an absence of holiday gift giving, nor only buying “needs” versus “wants”. We merely want to encourage kids to be thoughtful about their requests, so that they can avoid developing poor spending habits, and all of the issues those can create, today and tomorrow.

When you multiply the amount of gift suggestions today’s kids receive on a daily basis, by the number of places their parents can go to fulfill those requests thanks to online shopping, you could safely argue that there are more ways than ever to get the wrong gift, one that will go unused, unworn, and under appreciated.

We’ve learned that pretty much every time a child completes a Gift Survey for the first time, they very quickly want to complete a second, third, and fourth one… because they almost immediately grasp how their answers impact the resultant DIMS (Does It Make Sense?) Score®. Imagine being instantly comfortable with a holiday request? Imagine being able to explain to extended family members how much your son or daughter will use and welcome a gift in question, where to get it, how much it will cost, and how it might make sense for a group to contribute towards it’s purchase if it is a more expensive item?

Most of us working on the Gifting Sense project graduated from High School in the mid 80’s. In the 33 years since then, students have had to learn to process roughly 10 to 12 times as much information as we had to (while still having to manage all of the usual childhood and adolescent challenges). When you multiply the amount of gift suggestions today’s kids receive on a daily basis, by the number of places their parents can go to fulfill those requests thanks to online shopping, you could safely argue that there are more ways than ever to get the wrong gift, one that will go unused or unworn.

Gift Surveys are designed to help kids only ask for items they will really use and enjoy, and then help parents understand exactly where and how those gifts might be purchased. In other words, they can take a lot of pressure off the whole family.

If you dream of a holiday season filled with happy grateful children, relaxed extended family members, and no trips to the store or post office to make returns, consider asking your kids for the DIMS (Does It Make Sense?) Score® of the gifts they think they might like to receive. Our process is free and safe and has the simple ambition of helping families spend their time and money as wisely as possible.
